Islam in Russia Explored at Istanbul Forum Talks 4

Istanbul, 21 November 2024 – The fourth edition of the Istanbul Forum Talks, hosted by the Cihannuma Association, featured Dr. Almira Akhmetova presenting a thought-provoking lecture titled “Islam in Russia: Historical and Contemporary Issues.”

The event began with an introduction by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebubekir Ceylan, Vice President of the Cihannuma Association, who underscored the importance of engaging with diverse perspectives on Islam’s global history. Dr. Akhmetova offered a nuanced exploration of Islam’s 1,000-year journey in Russia, characterized by a pendulum between persecution and official recognition. While acknowledging the mixed legacy, she emphasized positive aspects and highlighted the challenges of conducting research on the topic within Russia itself, noting that much of her work was accomplished in Türkiye due to limited resources in her home country.

Following her lecture, a dynamic Q&A session allowed attendees to delve deeper into the historical and contemporary dimensions of Islam in Russia. The event concluded with a closing speech by Riza Yorulmaz, President of the Cihannuma Association, who presented Dr. Akhmetova with a commemorative gift in appreciation of her contributions.

The Istanbul Forum Talks serve as a precursor to the highly anticipated Cihannuma Istanbul Forum 2024, set to take place on 13–15 December, where prominent thinkers and leaders will gather to discuss pressing issues affecting the Muslim world.

Istanbul Forum Talks continues to bring insightful discussions on topics that shape the global Muslim experience.
